Competitive game. I thought Charlton was slightly open vs Colchester (despite winning 8-1 - Colchester play a fair few trialist every week).
More restrictive personel choice in midfield this week against a Bristol City side who moved the ball well around the centre circle.
Not many chances; Bristol probably not good enough to create danger against Alex Mitchell's defence (2001 senior CB) even if they equalised on a fluke second ball off a set piece.
Charlton didn't quite move the ball into final third enough, which is the downside of having an industrious midfield three.
Speaking of Ryan Yates earlier, Charlton have one player: Ryan Huke who does everything you don't notice. Closing down, second ball, runs, crashes the box. And football has a way to reward it, he's the one who scored vs Millwall (1-0) two weeks ago.
Casey with another top clash finish lashed out, deceiving player (for good) as you see him as stiff and one paced. Not when to trigger quickly. Kaheim Dixon still can't finish but makes a lot of runs, creative flicks and actually makes it stick in the channels.
I've got a slow burning opinion I’m collating on Laqueretabua, which is heading in the right direction. Mobile and can do a job to pass. Leaning towards okay good.
Fullah and Mwamba came on in second half to bring more dynamism and give and go in midfield.
Ibrahim Fullah’s trademark recoveries + carries
(and not “Fuller” on the game sheet)
Charlton trialist was a LCB who came on for the final 15'.
🌁🔴Bristol City I spotted three players:
- 10 Billy Phillips was sharp with close control and problem solving between the lines on rebounds (which is something you're looking for, games are also about that). I think he won 5-6 fouls.
- 9 Olly Thomas is intriguing. Not so consistent technically to hold up and pass albeit he was keen to challenge the CBs but a genuine change of pace when turning and running beyond.
Was often ball side when the ball moves under the halfway line, and ball far when the ball was around final third - more winger traits. For which he will need a bit more technical quality (even if there's been some flashes of it).
- 8 Adam Murphy made some sharp passes from a technical standpoint, more than changing the picture.
